In-8, red morocco, triple fillet, nicely decorated 5-rib spine, interior roulette, gilt edges ( 18th century binding). (229f. of 230, last blank missing here) / a-z6, ク6, Þ6, A-M6, N8 / 39 lines on 2 columns, gothic car / 147 x 201 mm. Very rare first edition of this immense moral poem of 36,000 verses with 82 characters, which paraphrases Bien avisé, mal avisé (a medieval moral play about good and evil) and recounts the Last Judgment of a righteous man and a worldly man (Bechtel). Simon Bougouinc, valet de chambre to Louis XII, is the author of plays and poetry. For him, morality sits above love, and the Lover remains faithful beyond the grave (Bechtel). Grotesque letter with title printed in round letters, woodcut on the second leaf depicting the author writing his work and printer's mark on the last leaf. Brunet describes the work as very rare, and points out that existing copies are often incomplete. Small scuff to first board. Title stained with trace of writing partly erased, small hole and small marginal lack, stains on second leaf, ink marks in margins of 3 leaves, last leaf stained with marginal repairs and handwritten inscriptions. Provenance: handwritten inscription on last leaf with in fine belongs to hautefort.
