Wood, marks of internal use, natural pigments. Songye, Democratic Republic of Congo. Height : 59 cm 59 cm - Width: 22 cm Provenance: former Roger Lefèvre gallery, Brussels in the '80s. Sukuwa shoulder mask, sculpted with a broad horseshoe-shaped base, topped by a long neck supporting the sagittal-crested head, the face adorned with tribal scarification. Managed by initiation societies (Vabong, Vadosong), these masks appear in the cycle of agrarian festivals. They personify a feminine, illustrious face. In the past, they were worn during pre-war ceremonies, but nowadays they appear mainly during apotropaic and rain-calling rites. They are also associated with the cult of fertility. Large mask of cubist design, the face covered with grooves dominated by a forehead crest, the half-cylindrical eyes pointing forward and the mouth in rectangular projection. Circa 1950. Height: 56 cm. Minor accidents and missing parts. Provenance : -Estate of Monsieur B, Landes-le-Gaulois. Teacher in Zaire in the 1980s.
