Description
NEVERS Earthenware plate with contoured rim and patriotic polychrome decoration of a citadel with lowered drawbridge surmounted by a flag bearing the inscription "vivre libre ou mourir" ("live free or die"), soldiers in arms at the ramparts and gate and cannons pointing outwards on either side. Often confused with the Bastille décor, it's more likely to evoke the defense of a beleaguered homeland. Late 18th century, revolutionary period.
