Ɏ A WALRUS TUSK RYUSA MANJU NETSUKE OF A COILED DRAGON Unsigned Japan, Tokyo, Asakusa, second half of 19th century Finely carved to one side with a coiled dragon, its expression fierce with neatly detailed features, the tail twisting like a robe and terminating in a fan-like element. The other side with a central stylized chrysanthemum, a himotoshi at its center, surrounded by scrolling stems with heart-shaped katsura leaves, reminiscent of reishi fungi and exhibiting skillfully executed ‘wormrot’, the material with natural inclusions typical of walrus ivory.
