KOGYOKU: A WOOD NETSUKE OF A TURTLE WITH TWO YOUNG By Kogyoku, signed Kogyoku 光玉 Japan, Edo (Tokyo), mid-19th century, Edo period (1615-1868) The adult tucking its head and legs inside its shell, its two young clambering on its back, all with neatly incised carapaces. The underside with two asymmetrical himotoshi and the signature KOGYOKU – the artist is apparently affiliated with Komin, who made similar groups of tortoises. HEIGHT 3 cm Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, few minuscule nicks. Fine, dark patina. Provenance: French private collection. Zacke, Fine Netsuke & Sagemono, 29 October 2021, Vienna, lot 197 ( sold for EUR 1,250). German private collection, acquired from the above.
