Ɏ A FINE IVORY MANJU NETSUKE OF THREE SARU (MONKEYS) Unsigned Japan, 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868) Finely carved in the round, the three monkeys grasping each other’s hands, their heads resting on the thigh of the next and their feet similarly joined around the central himotoshi to the back. The ivory bearing a rich, honey-yellow patina. DIAMETER 4 cm Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and natural age cracks. Museum comparison: Compare a closely related manju netsuke of three monkey, albeit in wood, unsigned, dated 17th/18th century, in the Linden Museum Stuttgart, accession number OA 19020. Trade Certificate: The trade certificate for the sale of this lot within the EU has been granted (permit number DE-DÜS231016-132). This item contains ivory, rhinoceros horn, tortoise shell, and/or some types of tropical wood and is subject to CITES when exporting outside the EU.
