AN AMUSING WOOD NETSUKE OF A CLIMBING MONKEY Unsigned Japan, 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868) Finely carved, the small saru (monkey) climbing upward, looking towards his hand which would have gripped the inro cord as if scaling a rope. Its expression is one of delight, its eyes staring upward gratified with its progress, its mouth open with a gleeful grin. The monkey’s hair is finely incised and neatly stained, and its eyes are inlaid with dark horn. Small himotoshi to the underside of the monkey. LENGTH 4.2 cm Condition: Very good condition with minor wear. Provenance: From an Italian private collection, acquired from Pierre-Eric Becker, Cannes, on 27 October 1997.
