AN UNUSUAL AND EARLY WOOD NETSUKE OF A RECUMBENT SHISHI Unsigned Japan, 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868) The very unusual and somewhat stylized shishi reclining with a ball resting between its front paws, its head lifted with an endearing expression, the eyes formed by raised polished dots with inlaid horn pupils. The whorls on the Buddhist lion’s body are inlaid to the center with gilt metal studs. Natural himotoshi. The well-toned wood bearing a fine, dark patina. LENGTH 5.8 cm Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and few surface scratches to the underside.
