Description

A FINE WOOD NETSUKE OF KAN’U WITH HIS HALBERD Unsigned Japan, 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868) Well-worn, the God of War standing holding his halberd in one hand as he pensively strokes his long beard with his free hand. His robes with neatly detailed folds, tied at the waist by a sash. Two himotoshi to the back, the larger generously excavated to accommodate the knot. The well-toned wood bearing a good patina. HEIGHT 8.2 cm Condition: Good condition with wear, rubbing, a plugged knot on his right shoulder, minor chip to the halberd, and a few small nicks here and there. Provenance: From an Italian private collection, acquired from Pierre-Eric Becker, Cannes, on 19 June 1998.
