SHOKO: A FINE AND RARE WOOD OKIMONO OF A RAT By Shoko Sugonoya, signed Shoko 尚古 Japan, Hida-Takayama, second half of 19th century The small okimono naturalistically carved as a rat seated on its haunches, hunched forward with its ears pricked and paws held forward. The fur of the rat is detailed with minute incisions, its notched tail curling around its legs, and its eyes of inlaid dark wood. Natural himotoshi. Signed to one foot SHOKO – this artist only rarely made okimono and was known for his fine netsuke carvings. HEIGHT 4.6 cm Condition: Very good condition with only minor wear, minuscule nibbling to the ears and a tiny chip to the very edge of one paw.
