He frequented the painters of the Paris School, including Modigliani, Kisling and Soutine. Spotted by Léopold Zborowski, he exhibited with Matisse. Gabriel Fournier was at "Cagnes sur Mer" in 1920. A number of canvases painted in Cagnes and Saint Paul de Vence in that year have recently appeared on the market. It was also at this time that he visited Renoir's studio thanks to Marcel Gimond, and acquired the above work from Jean. The Saint Paul de Vence episode is recounted in "Cors de chasse" (souvenirs) by Gabriel Fournier in the collection "Les problèmes de l'Art" Pierre Cailler Ed. Genève 1957 p. 200 à 203
