Rare offprint, illustrated with 2 folding engraved maps: Carte du cours du Maragnon ou la grande rivière des Amazones, and Carte du détroit appellé Pongo de Mansériché dans le Maragnon. Commissioned by the Académie des Sciences to lead an expedition to Peru to measure the length of a meridian arc near the equator, La Condamine stayed in America for 10 years. On his return trip, he travelled down the Amazon from Peru to Belèm in Brazil. A good copy. Fine restoration.
