Mangbetu, DR Congo, late 20th century Beautifully crafted "Domu" harp from the Mangbetu people of northeastern DRC. The resonance box is entirely covered with carefully sewn animal skin. The pegbox is carved in the shape of a figure displaying all the characteristics of Mangbetu statuary: arms outstretched along the body, protruding umbilicus, face with enigmatic expression prolonged by a "sugarloaf" skull reminiscent of the court art of this ancient kingdom. The five "hairpin" pegs allow for easier tuning. Beautiful dark honey patina. Wood, animal skin, nylon Length: 73 cm Bibliographical references : Mangbetu.
