Mangbetu, DR Congo, "Nedundu" slotted drum with a surprisingly curved, trapezoidal shape. One end is extended by an anthropomorphic head serving as a handle. This head is typical of Mangbetu statuary, with its serene face, elongated skull and facial scarring. The perimeter of the drum is decorated with two rows of carefully arranged upholsterer's nails. Attached to the king's court instrumental ensemble, the Nedundu drum was played during profane or ritual ceremonies. It could also be presented to prestigious visitors. Dense Khaya wood, iron nails and brass. 51 cm x 33 cm x 10 cm Beautifully crafted, this elegant drum features light and dark honey tones. Sold with its base.
