Edo, Republic of Benin, late 19th / early 20th century. Superb Edo ceremonial bell from the ancient kingdom of Benin, made using the lost-wax technique. The handle is extended by a bird's head with a long, curved beak evoking that of the Ibis, symbol of wisdom. The circumference is adorned with feathers and small curved protrusions. A second bird's head is embossed on the side of the bell. The bell, adorned with geometric motifs, provides a sense of balance and harmony. In sub-Saharan Africa, there is a special relationship between metallurgy and royalty. This large, exceptionally crafted bell bears witness to the courtly art that flourished in the ancient kingdom of Dahomey from the 17th century onwards. Bronze founders produced numerous pieces: ornamental plaques, royal heads, trumpets, bells... under the authority of the Oba, the traditional king of this ancient kingdom. Lost-wax bronze.
