Description

Roman stele with goddess Fortuna in limestone Rome, SS I-III AD. Acephalous limestone sculpture of Fortuna, probably part of a stele with the goddess in relief. The goddess, depicted standing with her weight on her left leg, dressed in a high-belted tunic centered by a Hercules knot, the tunic close to her body, revealing her form beneath, her mantle over her left shoulder, crossing her waist diagonally and held over her left arm. She also wears a beaded necklace around her neck and two bracelets, one on each wrist. She holds a cornucopia filled with fruits in her right hand as a sign of abundance. The left hand holds what appear to be two wineskins. Provenance: Swiss auction house. Formerly French private collection. Size: 30,00 x 30,00 cm.
