Tilman Riemenschneider (c. 1460 Heiligenstadt - 1531 Würzburg) Circumference Sculpture of a saint (Catherine of Alexandria) Limewood, carved, flattened and hollowed out at the back, polychrome paint and gilding overlaid; sword added; The sculpture depicts the saint in an accentuated S-swing of the figure, holding a book and sword in her hands as attributes, wearing a crown on her head with her hair falling long over her shoulders. Her floor-length robe with a high-waisted dress falls far down over her feet. The pleated style with the repetitive, bowl-like folds of her cloak is characteristic of the last phase of the late Gothic period, as can also be seen in the works of Riemenschneider. Together with the cut of her dress and the treatment of her graceful face with its pointed chin, it can be assumed that she was created around 1500-1520, probably in Franconia or Lower Franconia. Turning slightly to her right, the sculpture was probably originally conceived as a figure on the side of an altar or was once placed in a niche or on a pillar or wall on a console, h. 96 cm (without sword).
