LITERATURE - CHATEAUBRIAND François-René de (1768 - 1848) - Letter signed Letter signed, dated “Paris le 8 Janvier 1824” by the French writer, politician, diplomat and historian. Descended from an old aristocratic family from Brittany, Chateaubriand was a royalist by political disposition. In an age when large numbers of intellectuals turned against the Church, he authored the “Génie du christianisme” in defense of the Catholic faith. His works include the autobiography “Mémoires d'Outre-Tombe” ("Memoirs from Beyond the Grave"), published posthumously in 1849–1850. Recommendation letter addressed to a Count: “…La personne qui vous remettra cette lettre, Monsieur le Comte, est Mr. Varcellier dont j’ai déjà eu l’honneur de vous entretenir….”. 1 p. In-8.
