Null DAUM Nancy Multi-layered acid-etched and wheel-engraved glass vase on a ham…
Description

DAUM Nancy Multi-layered acid-etched and wheel-engraved glass vase on a hammered ground, decorated with pink and green crocus flowers on a light background. Bears a dedication from painter Pierre Puvis de Chavanne (1824-1898) to Gabriel Mourey (1865-1943) on the base "a Gabriel Mourey / 31 janvier 1902 / souvenir charmé de la conférence / Puvis" H: 14.5 cm. Gabriel Mourey, French art critic and writer, close to Stéphane Mallarmé and Claude Debussy, is known for his important contributions to the promotion of Art Nouveau and other modern art movements of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Although his main role was that of art critic and theorist, he also wrote about a wide range of artists of his time, including Pierre Puvis de Chavannes. Gabriel Mourey has often written about Puvis' importance in the development of modern art, in particular how his frescoes and murals influenced subsequent generations. Our vase, probably a special commission from Puvis de Chavannes to the Daum workshops, was intended to thank Gabriel Mourey for his support, and is an important testimony to the links that existed between the intellectuals, craftsmen and artists of the Art Nouveau and Symbolist circles of the time.
