Amulet in the form of a plaque of the god Bes. Ancient Egypt, Lower Epoch, 664-323 BC. Fayenza. Provenance: private collection, Paris. Acquired on the art market in the 1980s. In good state of preservation. Measurements: 3 cm (height). Bes is an ancient Egyptian deity worshipped as protector of the home and, more especially, of mothers, children and childbirth. The art represents him as a dwarf genie, bearded and with long hair, often showing his tongue. He usually appears naked or dressed in a lion skin, and may be depicted with a large erect phallus, due to his association with love and sexual pleasure. The function of amulets in ancient Egypt was to ward off bad luck and bring about happy events.
