Description

Jizhou style vessel. China, Song dynasty. 960-1279. Terracotta. Provenance: private collection in Paris. Acquired at the 1980 art market. In good state of preservation. Measurements: 11 cm (height). Although the Jizhou style is an evolution of the black ceramics of the Northern Song dynasty, it was already developed at the beginning of the Southern Song dynasty, in the province of Jiangxi. It will be the most innovative style in southern Chinese pottery, both for its techniques and its varied typologies. Specifically, this piece is worked with the technique that involves the use of bamboo ash slip as pigment, in contrast to the glossy glaze. As in the rest of the black ceramics from the Song period, the base is a black glaze rich in iron.
