Description

Romanesque capital, 2nd-3rd century AD. Limestone. Provenance: Private collection, Paris, France. Measures: 32 cm high; 40 cm. This Roman capital carved in stone dates from the 2nd century. The acanthus leaf wraps around the capital growing organically from the capitals to the abacus. The schematization that can be seen in the leaves responds to the changes produced in Roman art since the 2nd century A.D. and which are aimed at a greater schematization due to the search for an art that was "eternal" and aimed at the afterlife that religions such as Christianity defended.
