Ring with a cockfight. Greece, 6th-5th century BC. Gold. Provenance: - Possibly acquired at Christie's. - U.S. private collection. - London Art Market. Untouched. Weight: 14.42 gr. Measures: 24.86 mm (overall); 17.53 mm (inside diameter). Roman ring in gold, with a ring that widens towards the shoulders to form an almond-shaped chaton, which houses an incision representing a cockfight. It is a representation of great detail and good quality. In the Roman Empire there was a great fondness for cockfighting, which was used to acquire bravery. The oldest fights that we know of took place in Asia. In China they were already celebrated two thousand five hundred years ago and it is possible that a thousand years earlier they were held in India.
