Arab-Andalusian capital, Umayyad-Andalusian period, late 10th-early 11th century. Limestone. The volutes (ornaments in the form of scrolls) protruding from the corners have disappeared. Wear and abrasions consistent with age. Similar capitals can be found in the main museums or were sold in important auction houses: -New York Metropolitan Museum inventory number 30.95.134. -Victoria & Albert Museum, London Inventory number A.55-1925. Measurements: 27 x 14 x 22 cm. Weight: approximately 13 kg. Floral surface ornamentation in the form of lace became one of the hallmarks of the Spanish Umayyad style (examples can also be seen on textiles and ivory carvings of the period). This capital, which once topped a column, has four identical sides. The decorative vegetal stems climb, intertwine and extend out to the sides, giving the stone a sense of lightness.
