Head of a priest. Ancient Egypt. Ptolemaic period, 332 - 30 B.C. Terracotta. Provenance: Private collection of Mr. S. D., acquired in the 1900s - David Ghezelbash, Paris. Measurements: 9.7 cm x 14.3 cm x y 7.5 cm. This head of a priest from the Ptolemaic period is characterized by the quality of its carving. Large almond-shaped eyes and fleshy lips finely outlined form harmonious features. The face, although severe, emanates peace and deep wisdom. Portraits of pharaohs, queens, members of the elite and important figures were a common theme in Ptolemaic sculpture. These portraits were characterized by their realism and the idealization of their models. Ptolemaic sculpture developed in the Ptolemaic Kingdom, founded by Alexander the Great in Egypt after his death in 323 BC and lasting until its conquest by the Romans in 30 BC. This era was characterized by a cultural synthesis between Greek, Egyptian and other Eastern Mediterranean artistic traditions.
