Description

Eyes; Egypt, New Kingdom, Dynasties XVIII-XX, 1550-1070 BC. Vitreous paste. Measurements: 3 x 7.5 cm (eyes); 1 x 9.5 cm (eyebrows). Pair of eyes made in ancient Egyptian glass paste and almond-shaped alabaster. The representation of the eyes reached a great popularity in Egyptian art, in fact many sarcophagi had two eyes painted on the east side, to allow the deceased to contemplate the sunrise. Although the most known and reproduced in art was the Wedjat/Udjat or Eye of Horus is an ancient Egyptian symbol of protection, nobility and good health. These amulets were worn and given as gifts for protection in life and death. The history of this symbol is linked to Egyptian mythology, according to which Horus lost his eye fighting against his uncle Seth in the battles to regain the throne of Egypt. However, the god of science and magic, Thoth, found the pieces of the eye and put them back together so that Horus could offer them to Osiris to eat and be resurrected.
