Relief with kufic script from the Islamic culture, 10th century AD. Limestone. Provenance: Former private collection in Toronto, USA. Fragment in good condition. Measurements: 30 x 29 x 10 cm. Relief fragment with four lines/bands of kufic script, a style of calligraphy considered the oldest type of writing in the Arabic language. Its name is due to the fact that it was developed in the Kufa culture, now Iraq, from the modification of the ancient Syriac alphabet and used to write the first copies of the Koran. It is present on numerous monuments, coins, everyday utensils and even on the current flag of Iraq.
