Description

Valencian school; 17th century. ‘Still life of pomegranates and plums’. Oil on canvas. The original canvas is preserved. It has restorations. Measurements: 56 x 40,5 cm; 71 x 56 cm (frame). In this canvas we see a still life perfectly framed within the early Spanish Baroque style, with a sober, geometric and rigorous composition, practically symmetrical and with the elements situated on two planes, on a table that runs parallel to the lower edge of the painting and against a dark, neutral background, on which they stand out directly illuminated by a spotlight, artificial and directed, of a scenographic nature. In the centre is a glazed ceramic bowl with pomegranates and grapes. The Valencian school is different from other Spanish artistic centres of the period, thanks to the fact that during most of the 15th and 16th centuries there was a large number of Italian and Flemish painters. Thus, throughout the history of art, Valencia has been an important focal point within Spanish art, the versatility of Valencian painting, conditioned by Italian influence or the Mannerist sensibility of the Castilian school. This work participates in this unique and syncretic style characteristic of the school.
