Description

Lions; Spanish School, c. 1500. Carved stone. Measurements: 25 x 53 x 22 cm. Carved stone with a pair of lions whose bodies are united as they are made from the same block of stone. The piece stands out for its synthetic and stylized finish. Both faces, each one on one side of the piece, have the same design, lying down with the front paws facing forward and the jaws slightly open. This iconography comes from the Hellenistic period, and became popular in medieval Europe, conceived as a representation of the power of death, and influenced by the funerary role of the figure of the lion in the Christian religion. It is a metaphor in which lions represent danger, but also power and protection.
