Contemporary army-green silk-grained half-percaline with corners, untrimmed, headpieces on spines, printed covers preserved. €1,200 Head of the series of the most formidable travel journal of the second half of the 19th century. It offers in pre-publication all the great exploration stories - in original French editions or in translation - of the period, especially those from the last terra incognita: Central Africa and the Poles. Aware of new readers' interest in all that was stirring minds at the time, Louis Hachette sought to surround himself with enterprising collaborators to whom he could entrust the direction of new collections. Édouard Charton had founded and directed the Magasin pittoresque in 1833, then helped launch L'Illustration in 1843. Louis Hachette entrusted him with the management of this new journal devoted to travel, which was to introduce readers to the new expeditions that were setting out to discover the world, with the editor responsible for "informing his readers [...] of the fatigues they have endured, the dangers of all kinds they have encountered, the curiosities of the countries they have visited, and the manners and customs of the inhabitants". (Archives Hachette, quoted by J.-Y. Mollier). Numerous woodcut illustrations in and out of text. Exceptional edition on chine from the first twenty years of publication. Spotting due to damp on some lower corners, but overall of fine quality.

Mademoiselle de Clermont depuis Paris jusqu'à Strasbourg, du mariage du Roy, et du voyage de la Reine, depuis Strasbourg jusqu'à Fontainebleau ; de l'entrevue des deux Rois et des deux Reines au village de Bouron. Chaalons, Claude Bouchard, 1725. Small in-8, [6] ff, 405 pp, [1] f. Brown calf, ornate ribbed spine, title page, wide light-brown framing on covers, red speckled boards (period binding). Some restorations. First edition of this diary printed in Chalons-en-Champagne, which faithfully relates the ceremony of the marriage by proxy of King Louis XV, then aged fifteen, to Marie Leszczinska, daughter of Stanislas duc de Lorraine and King of Poland, which took place on August 15, 1725 in Strasbourg cathedral. The book continues with a report on the sumptuous return journey of the new Queen of France to Fontainebleau to join her husband. The author of this journal is Chevalier Daudet de Nismes, the King's geographer and historiographer to Marie-Anne de Bourbon, Princess of Clermont, who accompanied Marie Leszczinska. From the library of François-César Le Tellier, Marquis de Courtanvaux (1718-1781), with his armorial bookplate (cat. 1782, no. 2023). His library of travel books was the most famous of its time (Ruggieri 554.)
