On the latter's death, he was entitled to recover the sum loaned, but Saint Aubin's heirs, having sold the mortgaged properties, charged the debt to the new owner, who protested in good faith not to pay. These memoirs are very interesting documents on the trade that linked the islands to metropolitan France (cotton, indigo, etc.), negotiated in Lorient, France, and the proceeds of which, converted by bills of exchange, were sent back to Réunion...
