Description

"Demosthenes", XIX century. After POLYEUCTUS ( 280 B.C.). Marble. Measurements: 110 x 40 x 30 cm. Neoclassical version of the statue of Demosthenes made by the Greek sculptor of Hellenistic period Polieucto. The biographers say that the effigy was placed in the agora of Athens, as a tribute and recognition to the orator after his death. In Roman times, numerous reproductions were made. One of them is preserved in the Vatican Museums. It is a naturalistic portrait, far from the canons of the classical period. Demosthenes shows tension in his face, due to an effort of concentration. He is immortalized at a mature age and wears a draped and humble tunic of the himation type. He is holding a parchment in his hands. Polieucto's work marked a turning point in the Greek tradition of portraiture: the sculptor does not limit himself to representing the physical aspect, but the inner emotion. The neoclassical version in question also seeks to capture the inner strength of the speaker.
