Description

"Venus pudica", early twentieth century. Stucco sculpture. Measurements: 80 x 27 x 35 cm. Sculpture in bronze, worked in round bulk, representing a Venus Puditia just out of the bath. The representation of Aphrodite after the bath derives from Praxiteles, although the sculptures of this author showed the standing figure hiding her nudity with both arms, as shown in the Capitoline Venus. The squatting Venus, on the other hand, became popular especially in the neoclassical period, in which they reinterpreted the Greek models with relative freedom. The young woman folds back on herself to cover her pubis and bust, adopting a graceful gesture. The author manages to convey the carnality of the body and the curves with naturalistic audacity, despite the idealization of the features.
