Description

EMILE BULCKE (1875-1963). "De wind", 1933. Patinated bronze sculpture on marble base. Signed and dated: EM. BULCKE / 1933. Measurements: 45 x 17 x 15 cm. Emile Bulcke was a Belgian painter and sculptor born in Ostend, although his training took place between Bruges and Antwerp. In the late nineteenth century his work was awarded several prizes, which earned him a tribute from his hometown, Ostend, and a scholarship to Paris to study with Léon Bonnat, as well as a trip to Italy. However, the tragic death of his daughter Dinah, victim of the flu epidemic that devastated Europe in 1918, would end up marking his production, turning his efforts to preserve the memory of the girl. This sculpture is, precisely, a small-scale reproduction of the original in the Leopold Park in Ostend, which represents his deceased daughter, thus paying her a posthumous tribute.
