Description

JEAN LÉON BITTER-ARY (1883-1973). "Nymphe avec fauve", ca. 1920. Sculpture in patinated bronze on veined marble base. Signed: ARY BITTER Measurements: 90 x 20 x 30 cm. Ary-Bitter was born in Marseille, where he studied and excelled as an outstanding student, which earned him a sculpture award in 1900 and, two years later, a scholarship to work in the workshop of Louis-Ernest Barrias in Paris. In the French capital he managed to enter the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts. The second decade of the 20th century witnessed his consecration as an artist, as he received a succession of public commissions, such as the realization of the war monument of Sanary-sur-Mer or, in the private sphere, the creation of a "car mascot" for the car of Mme Louis Renault. In 1924, he won the gold medal at the Paris Salon and, a year later, the Susse brothers' foundry began working with him. In this context of prolific creation can be framed "Nymphe avec fauve", which highlights two of the premises of the artist throughout his production: the animalistic representation and gentleness when showing the female nude.
