MANUEL TELLEZ BERRAQUERO (Seville, 20th century). "Dolorosa". Candlestick carving. Silk dress and velvet mantle embroidered in gold. In carved and polychrome wood. Measurements: 190 x 150 x 60 cm; 210 cm (bottom with cape extended). Processional Virgin, work of the famous Sevillian artist Manuel Tellez, who currently enjoys great recognition among the brotherhoods of his city. It is a Virgin of dress, so it is in the face and hands where the author deposits all his feeling, transmitting with the Virgin of half-closed eyelids and arched eyebrows a deep impression, which denotes a unique handling of the art of carving. His excellent wood carvings have taken part in numerous processions and patron saint festivals, such as his celebrated Señora de la Misericordia. The spokesmen of the Brotherhood of Jesus of Forgiveness highlighted the "expression" and "look" of the Virgin, as they explained, which has "a great sacred unction" and calls for "prayer". Manuel Téllez Berraquero was also appointed to make the Christ of Mercy, head of the Parish Group of the same title and which is attached to the parish of Our Lady of Amparo. The sculptor was also responsible for carving the image of the Virgin of Sorrows, of the same Association.
