Description

Circular center with three Empire Caryatids, after models of PIERRE-PHILIPPE THOMIRE (1751-1843). Possibly Russian Empire, 19th century. Patinated and gilded bronze. Crystal. In good condition. Measurements: 68 x 30 cm. This large and magnificent Empire style centerpiece is defined by the three caryatids that make up its body. It closely follows models of Philippe Thomire, French sculptor known, above all, for his works in gilded bronze, thanks to which he became the main caster in France at the end of the XVIII century, with an important workshop established in 1775. It consists of three stylized draped sculptures rising on a vegetal base embellished with winged sphinxes, angels and imperial eagles. The three women hold above their heads a crystal centerpiece with its main body ornamented with diamond-tipped motifs and the galloned mouth by means of large facets. The piece has been conceived through a sculptural concept characteristic of this time. This type of scenes were very common in the decoration of the centerpieces, in many occasions mythical or religious characters were represented, linked to a historicist sense and aesthetics.
