Five-arm bronze chandelier. The arms are openwork with a diamond-shaped motif, each supporting two high molded binnacles; ringed shaft, suspension ring. Flanders, mid-15th century H. 92 cm - L. 102 cm This type of brass chandelier is known as an Arnolfini fixture, in reference to Jan van Eyck's painting of the Arnolfini couple (1434), in which a chandelier of the same type is depicted (fig. a). Manufactured in Flanders, these Arnolfini chandeliers were exported in large numbers throughout Europe, but only a few have survived. The Musée Diocésain de Solsona in Catalonia preserves one from the Santa Fe de Valldeperes church in Navas, Catalonia (inv. MDCS 555) (fig. b).
