Beautiful bronze Christ, hollow cast, remains of gilding. Head tilted forward on the right shoulder; horizontal arms slightly bent; engraved submammary ribs; long perizonium falling to the knees, with flap and rich knot projecting from the abdomen; bent legs offset to the right; slightly divergent feet resting on a suppedaneum. Germany, Cologne, 12th century H. Height: 19.5 cm Provenance : private collection southwest The typology of this Christ is derived from the famous Christ of the Cross by Gero (fig.), preserved in Cologne Cathedral and dating from the 10th century. This large altarpiece crucifix served as a model, conveying a new iconography based on the human reality of the Crucifixion. It preceded a doctrinal shift, with Jesus presented as suffering, rather than glorious and sovereign.
