Oil lamp with scene from the Old Testament. Ancient Rome, 4th-5th century AD. Terracotta. Good condition. Provenance: Acquired Aweidah Gallery, Israel, 2014. Measurements: 11 x 6 cm. The scene depicted is an event recorded in the Bible commemorating the exploration of the land of Canaan by order of Moses. At the time of the departure of the Israelites to the north of Canaan, they meditate on the best way to enter the Promised Land. So, God tells Moses to send some of his men to explore the land and bring him a physical test that will answer whether or not it can be habitable land. Since it is a dangerous land, Moses decides to make a selection of the wisest and bravest men from each of the twelve tribes to undertake the journey, among whom were Joshua and Caleb, the latter belonging to the tribe of Judah. Both, together with the help of others selected, decide to undertake the expedition of the different cities and fields, and as proof of the richness of the land, they collected an enormous bunch of grapes for whose transport they helped themselves with a stick carried by both, being this finding the explanation to the attribution of the name of the Valley of Eshcol, word this last one translated as bunch. All this helped them to verify that it was indeed a very rich and favorable land to settle, except for its inhabitants, whom they defined as enormous, strong and extremely bellicose beings with whom they had to confront.
