Description

BORDIER Frères, Geneva, early 19th century Pocket watch in 18k (750 thousandths) yellow gold with a dial edged with imitation half-pearls. The hands are probably natural (not tested). On the back shell, on royal blue guilloché enamel, a rich gold-leaf decoration surrounds a gallant scene. The shepherd looks at the shepherdess, who clearly shows her legs from toes to knees. Under the pretext of washing them, she reveals this intimacy that no one would dare look at if they were well educated... except the famous shepherd, who points his finger in a direction that is nothing more than an invitation to follow him with a wry smile. Excellent condition. Manual mechanical movement with key (present). Verge escapement movement, with chain, fusée. Signed plate. Enamel dial painted with Arabic numerals and 15' division. Very good condition, glass detached (to be replaced). Functional at time of appraisal. Gross weight: 59.5 g. The Bordier family has a long tradition of watchmaking dating back to the 17th century, but it was not until the mid-18th century that the Bordiers joined forces to establish their company as one of Geneva's leading watchmakers. According to New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Bordier brothers we're talking about here are recorded between 1815 and 1830. Many of their watches are held in major museums.
