Description

James SCHRAPNELL, London, 18th century Pocket watch in 18k (750 thousandths) yellow gold decorated with royal blue enamel on brushed and finely painted gold. A dog in a garden faces a fountain decorated with gold highlights featuring fabulous phoenix-like animals. The water and other lines are etched in point. This theme of a dog in front of a fountain was widespread in 17th and 18th century iconography. The dog represents fidelity, the fountain signifies immortality (like the fountain of youth), and the phoenix is the animal that rises from its ashes. Placed side by side, these subjects convey a message that is none other than immortal love. Whether we're young together or time has left its wrinkles, love is here and will be for eternity. Manual mechanical movement with key (present). Verge escapement movement. Enamel painted dial with Arabic numerals. Very good condition. Non-functional. Gross weight: 72.9 g.
