ANTRAM, London, 1691-1723 Remarkable silver table watch containing an onion watch with an engraved dial and a portrait of a lady painted on enamel on the back (very slight cracks). The base is engraved as was done in the 17th and 18th centuries, with sequences of decorations and medallions featuring the characters. Such decorations were used on the facades of houses, such as the one in Metz, the House of Heads. Sometimes, they simply represented the owners of the house or important figures. In the case of the base of the support, we seem to be dealing with exoticism: one of the figures has an Asian profile wearing a long braid. Another is reminiscent of a South American Indian. The foot provides the ideal pedestal for Atlas supporting the watch, which, if the nape of the neck is anything to go by, is quite heavy. The onion has an opening on each side, allowing the movement to be seen, and is surmounted by a child holding a bunch of grapes. Other figures are engraved around the rim. Very fine condition. Manual mechanical movement with key (present). Verge escapement movement, with chain, fusee. Very good condition. Functional at time of appraisal. Gross weight: 237.7 g.
