JEAN LERAT (1913-1992) Mère et son enfant à la sortie de la boulangerie (Mother and child leaving the bakery), 1964, specially commissioned for M. et MmeM. in Bourges. High relief in 9 assembled elements. Chamotte stoneware, enamel, slip; fired in the Rue Vauvert kiln in Bourges. Mounted on a thick cement base in the 1980s. Signed and dated J. LERAT 1964 lower right. Height: 111cm - Length: 48cm Provenance and history: This work was created in 1964 by Jean Lerat for Mr. and Mrs. M.; owners of a bakery on rue Jean-Jacques Rousseau in Bourges opposite the artist's father's studio. When the baker couple retired and sold the business, the new owners, Mr. and Mrs. J., kept the sculpture in an interior alcove. In 1989, when the business was moved a few meters, it was mounted on a cement support and placed outside, to be admired by passers-by for over thirty years. It features prominently on a brochure entitled Laissez-vous conter Jean et Jacqueline Lerat dans la ville, published by the Bourges town council. Important: This work will be included in the catalog raisonné of Jean and Jacqueline Lerat's work, currently in preparation.
