PAUL JOUVE (1878-1973) Reclining black panthers, 1922 Mixed media, Indian ink, gouache and oil on heavy cardboard. Presented under a marie-louise in a modern frame with large gold leaf molding. Signed P. JOUVE in red lower left. Sight: 35.3 x 60cm With frame: 54 x 79cm History and provenance: This painting was created in 1922 by Paul Jouve in preparation for the major exhibition devoted to him at the Haussmann-Danthon gallery in May of that year; some one hundred of the artist's works (drawings, paintings and sculptures) were shown on this occasion. The animal painter-sculptor then kept this painting in his studio, before offering it to the public again at the major exhibition devoted to him at the Musée de la France d'Outre-mer in 1955. Paul Jouve later presented it to the current owner's father. Acknowledgements We would like to thank the artist's successor for confirming the authenticity of this work.
