Jean-François RAFFAELLI (1850 - 1924). The Old Oak. 1907. Etching in colors, signed lower right, numbered 48, from an edition at 225 copies. Very darkened on both sides. Edges stretched on glass. Framed. (Delteil 79) 44 x 56cm. Sheet: 63 x 74cm. Provenance: Estate of Monsieur Louis Thirion, furniture in the mansion built in 1923 by Gibert et Ogé, which has remained in the family ever since. Expert : Madame Sylvie COLLIGNON Jean-François Raffaelli was a French realist painter, sculptor and engraver who exhibited with the Impressionists. He was also active as an actor and writer. Born in Paris on April 20, 1850, he was of Tuscan descent through his paternal grandparents. Raffaelli studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under the tutelage of the famous artist Jean-Léon Gérôme. He made his debut at the Paris Salon in 1870. Raffaelli's work encompassed a variety of media, including painting, sculpture and engraving. He created a number of sculptures, although they are known today only through photographs. In the last years of his life, he concentrated on color etching. Raffaelli's paintings often depicted scenes of workers and the poor in the Paris suburbs, in a naturalistic style.
