Johan - Barthold JONGKIND (1819 - 1891). Maaslins - Sunset in the port of Antwerp. Reunion of two etchings. Beautiful yellowed and oxidized proofs, foxing, traces of passe-partout. Framed (not examined outside the frames). (Delteil 8, 15II/IV) Dimensions: 15.5 x 23.2cm. With margins: 23.7 x 32cm. With margins: 30 x 37cm. 27.5 x 38cm. Provenance: Estate of Monsieur Louis Thirion, furniture in the mansion built in 1923 by Gibert et Ogé, which has remained in the family ever since. Expert : Madame Sylvie COLLIGNON Johan Barthold Jongkind was a Dutch landscape painter and engraver active mainly in France, and considered a precursor of Impressionism. Jongkind studied with Schelfhout in The Hague before moving to Paris in 1846. He spent most of his career in France, producing a large number of watercolors of landscapes and portraits of peasants. Jongkind's work is often described as a link between the works of Corot and Monet. His small, informal landscapes perpetuate the tradition of Dutch landscape painters while stimulating the development of Impressionism. Jongkind was born on June 3, 1819 in Lattrop, Netherlands, and died on February 9, 1891 in Côte-Saint-André, France, at the age of 71.
