Description

SEBASTIAN HAMMWÖHNER (Frechen, Germany, 1974). Untitled (12). 2012. Wood and wool. Unique piece. Measurements: 250 x 6 x 6 cm. To make these stylized and multicolored poles of cut wood, Hammwöhner wraps them with geometric precision in some parts, studying the texture and thickness of the wool he uses with artisanal parsimony. They are ritual wrappings, bindings with colored threads that act as three-dimensional echoes of the drawings of the carpets. With a systematic logic and an interdisciplinary methodology, Hammwöhner brings the archaic into the 21st century. Hammwöhner's multifaceted oeuvre includes site-specific installations, pastel drawings and sculptures. He uses appropriation with the forensic methods of cultural anthropology and converses with abstract contemporary art. Part of a photographic image of archaic American or Middle Eastern textiles reproduced through a virtual interface, resulting in a pastel drawing, it is both a representation of the utilitarian object and the illusion of such. Floating in a charcoal-black monochromatic field, the colors retain their vividness though faded at some points. The patterns accumulated by the interwoven fabrics merge and separate into shapes. Sebastian Hammwöhner lives and works in Berlin. He studied at the Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Karlsruhe between 1995 and 2001. Solo exhibitions (selection): 2012 Sebastian Hammwöhner, Meyer Riegger, Karlsruhe, Karlsruhe, Germany 2009 Sebastian Hammwöhner: Its All Mental, Meyer Riegger, Karlsruhe, Karlsruhe, Germany 2008 Sebastian Hammwöhner, Meyer Riegger, Karlsruhe, Karlsruhe, Germany.
