Description

BERT VREDEGOOR (Netherlands, 1956). "Sacred Ground 5," 2003. Spray print on velvet. Diptych. Copy 5/10. The piece is split in two down the middle, vertically. Signed, dated, titled and justified by hand on the back. Measurements: 180 x 170 cm. Velvet is for Bert Vredegoor an essential and defining material, the driving force of many of his most important series. This is the case of the work "Sacred Ground 5" in tender, in whose creative process the Belgian artist bleached the black velvet with chlorine solutions at different concentrations to create the image of a gothic door forged in iron and illuminated from the bottom by a faint golden light. The result is a golden yellow coloration (sometimes red) that is illuminated from the dark background. With this chemical process Vredegoor manages to create light in the dark in the literal and figurative sense of the term. In the artist's own words "These works are intimate, contemplative, inspire tranquility and refer to mystical and religious perceptions. The magic of golden light is captured and preserved through a unique and enduring process." Trained at the Academy of Art and Design in Arnhem (The Netherlands), Vredegoor's creative imagination leads the artist to experiment with various techniques and materials, making hers a unique and unmistakable art.
