Description

COCTEAU Jean (1889 - 1963) MANUSCRIT autograph signed "Jean Cocteau", Le petit prince est assis à la terrasse du Fouquet's bar, [1910 ?]; 4 oblong pages in-fol. (27 x 35 cm) of music paper. Long early poem. This poem, with 13 sizains, was published in the magazine Comoedia on June 12, 1910; it was not included in Le Prince frivole (Mercure de France, 1910). "Le soir est violet et mou comme une figue L'oisiveté m'emplit d'une aimable fatigue I confuse nature and artifice"... The manuscript is curiously written on sheets of music paper, in black ink, with numerous erasures and corrections, and significant variations from the published text. For example, a new version of the first three verses quoted above is noted in the margin; this is the one chosen for publication. The last two stanzas are very different from those published. Oeuvres poétiques complètes (Pléiade), p. 1476-1478
